In many places, including where I grew up, sexuality is treated as a taboo. This causes silence which in turn causes difficulty to talk about sex. Having a similar experience, I know how much that shaped me — and how different it can be when you have the space to talk about things openly.
Before moving to the Netherlands, I worked in schools and youth centers for over 7 years, where I supported young people through counseling and workshops on relationships, mental health, and sexuality. I also contributed to suicide prevention projects, running workshops on stress, depression, and anxiety. Through this I learned how valuable it is to have these important yet difficult conversations with children and youth.
In 2021, I moved from my home country Slovenia to the Netherlands, where I embraced the culture of directness and openness. Here I earned my Master’s degree in Child and Adolescent Psychology, learned Dutch, and gained valuable insight into both the Dutch and international school systems.
In workshops, I create a safe space that allows students to talk openly and fearlessly about sensitive topics. I use humor (sometimes successfully, sometimes less so), empathy, and clear boundaries to create this safe space. Sex Ed isn’t about memorizing trivia; it’s about starting real conversations and knowing that “I saw this on TikTok” doesn’t count as reliable information.
